Unusual Consultant Start-Up Thrives Early On
Fifteen-month-old consulting firm Archstone Portfolio Solutions has doubled its assets under advisement in its first year of business through its unusual business model of outsourcing its manager research department. The Baltimore-based firm that partners with Summit Strategies now has $1.1 billion in assets under advisement.
The firm, which started with zero assets, quickly built it to $500 million in three months. Firm executives note they have out-performed any expectations at this point and feel the opportunity for small institutions to get access to robust manager due-diligence is appealing.
Archstone, which was designed around this business model, allows smaller institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals to work with a large and well known firm that usually would be out of their reach. Without this middle ground, these smaller institutions would typically be working with significantly smaller consulting firms with a much less robust due diligence staff.

This potent mix of forces has heightened the need for in-depth analysis of portfolio structure, characteristics, performance, investment policy, and manager selection. Read more...
