Archstone’s National Advisory Council is comprised of a group of senior investment professionals whose experience spans virtually every asset class and industry. This group provides guidance to the firm on business and investment strategy with an emphasis on themes that are considered collectively to provide attractive risk/return characteristics.

Hewson Baltzell: Co-Founder of Innovest (now the ESG Research Division of Risk Metrics), an internationally recognized investment research and advisory firm specializing in analyzing companies' performance on environmental, social, and strategic governance issues, with a particular focus on their impact on competitiveness, profitability, and share price performance. Innovest was the subject of a Business Week cover story in January of 2007. Prior experience includes:

  • Lehman Brothers and Chase Manhattan Bank, commercial & investment banker specializing in corporate finance & real estate
  • REDESCO, Inc., a private, foreign-owned investment company, Portfolio Manager for real estate and venture capital
  • Mellon Bank, International Lending Officer and Financial Analyst

Hewson has an undergraduate degree in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School. He is a frequent conference speaker and lecturer at institutions such as Wharton and Columbia University.




Kenneth T. Berents: A private investor, Ken is retired Managing Director of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, where he was Senior Portfolio Manager of Goldman’s largest investment manager with $30 billion under management. Previously:

  • Wheat First Securities - Wachovia Securities’ predecessor - Director of Equity Research and Managing Director
  • Alex. Brown and Legg Mason, media industry analyst
  • Baltimore Evening Sun and Bergen Record, newspaper reporter and recipient of numerous awards for his writing, including an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship at Princeton University in the late 1970s

Ken is a member of the board of directors of China 3C Group and is a trustee of Mercersburg Academy, The Collegiate School and the Powell Endowment for Economic Literacy. He is a Villanova University graduate and earned a masters degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Ken is a frequent speaker on investment topics and is widely quoted in national and trade publications.




Kenneth C. Ebbitt: President of Brookside Properties, LLC, a land development and property management company, Ken is a seasoned executive with broad business experience in the financial services industry:

  • Wall Street Connect (WSC), Chairman & CEO of a provider of automated investment services, which he purchased and restructured on behalf of a group of investors
  • Waterhouse Asset Management (WAM), Chairman and CEO of a mutual fund company started as a subsidiary of Waterhouse Securities. Currently, WAM manages over $14 billion
  • Reich & Tang, Executive Vice President and Chairman of the Cortland Trust Funds Cortland Financial Group, Chairman and CEO of the manager of the Cortland Funds before merger of the firm in 1991 with Reich & Tang
  • Reserve Partners, President of the Reserve Fund’s brokerage affiliate Lazard Freres & Co., and Paine Webber, institutional sales

Ken is a Managing Director of Total Bank Solutions, an investment services company formed in partnership with Deutsche Bank. He is a trustee of the Rectory School, Pomfret, CT, and Chairman of the Board of Marianapolis Preparatory School, Thompson, CT. Ken is a graduate of Georgetown University.




Gates Helms Hawn: Gates is former Global Head of Credit Suisse Financial Services, a member of the Credit Suisse First Boston Executive Board, and a director of CSFB (USA) Inc., Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc., and DLJdirect, Inc. Prior experience includes:

  • Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Chairman & CEO of the Financial Services Group
  • Member of the New York Stock Exchange and an Exchange Official of the American Stock Exchange
  • Bankers Trust Company, senior managerial assignments in international banking, investment management, fiduciary services and securities markets departments

Gate's role as board member and executive officer of numerous professional organizations contributed importantly to developments in the financial markets during the 1980s and 1990s. He has also served on many boards of philanthropic, cultural and academic institutions including Deerfield Academy, the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey, the Morristown Memorial Hospital Foundation, and the Upper Raritan Watershed Association and was Chairman of the New York State Historical Association for a dozen years. Gates has been a featured speaker and panelist at financial industry conferences and seminars in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. He is a graduate of Williams College and has taught guest seminars on leadership skills and responsibilities at Williams College and the American University in Bulgaria.




Hamilton Moses III: Chip, founder of Alerion Advisors, which serves corporate boards and non-profit organizations, has advised many corporations, hospitals, foundations and governments as a partner and senior advisor with the international firm, The Boston Consulting Group (1995- 2005), was the chief physician and COO of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, (1988-1994), and was interim chief of psychiatry of the Partners Health Care System and McLean Hospital (Harvard) in Boston (1996-98).

  • Chip is the author of 150 scholarly publications, co-edited Hopkins’ Principles and Practice of Medicine, and co-founded the Johns Hopkins Medical Letter – Health After 50, a popular letter for the public. Dr. Moses has co-founded two companies, served on many corporate and non-profit boards, and been an officer of several academic societies.
  • He is past trustee of the McLean and Johns Hopkins Hospitals, was a Special Ministerial Advisor to the National Health Service (UK) and is an (adjunct) Professor of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
  • Chip has been active in historic preservation, conservation of family farms, the Episcopal Church, and is a sailor and landscape photographer.
